Sound Design

The making of 'Trinity' using anything you can hit, pluck, strum, mangle.

TRINITY-2024
00:00 / 04:15

'Trinity' started as an experiment in sound design. The concept was to combine live and sampled instruments with found sounds using various sampling and digital processing to produce a palette of sounds that could be used to create pieces of 'music'.

The found sounds were captured on mobile phone and portable digital recorder. Chesil beach on the south coast of England was a favourite spot for original sounds as was a local factory unit where recordings of the metal stairwell, goods lift door shutting and goods trolleys being pushed through the space which had a lot of natural reverb. Sounds also included a microwave and washing machine

Live instruments used included hammered dulcimer, accordion, ukelele as well as more traditional acoustic/electric and bass guitars. A darbuka and a large buffalo drum have become favourites to use as well anything else that can be hit with knitting needles such as a metal music stand, baking tray full of water and flowers vases.

Some of the beach and factory sounds can just be made out in the opening few seconds of the track.
